MILANO FILM NETWORK
A festival a year long
MFN - Milano Film Network unites the experience and resources of Milan’s seven film festivals for a cultural offering throughout the year and a series of services for those who operate in the cinema and in the audiovisual sector in Milan and in Italy.
The network is realized thanks to the contribution of the Fondazione Cariplo, is the result of the self-organization of the seven film festivals held in Milan – African, Asian and Latin American Film Festival, Festival MIX Milano, Filmmaker, Invideo, Milano Film Festival, Sguardi Altrove Film Festival, Sport Movies & Tv Fest – and aims to include not only operators of the audiovisual sector but also institutions and socio-economic players, in recognition of the value of the cinema as a form of art but also as a productive sector which generates positive consequences for the urban fabric.
The primary objective of the project is, in the short term, to create a system of cinema around the city of Milan, i.e. a stable model of collaboration through an inter-organizational network, in the first place between the film festivals, which allows an innovative exchange of knowledge, instrumental resources, services and opportunities.
In the long term, the project aims to make Milan “The city of independent cinema”, making the most of its resources through a network open to the participation of other subjects.
The activity of the MFN is developed in two main areas. On the one hand, an offer of SERVICES linked to the production of the event supporting the network and at the disposal of the local area, including management of hospitality, the systems of subtitling, technological adaptation of the technical equipment for the screenings (in view of the inevitable passage from film to digital technology); movement of the screening copies of the films that will be shown during the festivals; the service of venue management, in agreement with the management of the cinemas and the other culktural venues; the organization of the voluntary service, typical of the cultural events with a great participation, in particular by young people.
On the other hand, the organization of a calendar of activities of scheduling and permanent exhibition, in collaboration with other subjects who also operate in the cinema, such as te creation of a common archive and the digitalization of the works in the archives of the individual festivals, the distribution of the films in the cinemas, the organization of workshops and training paths, starting up initiatives of production of audiovisual projects.

Sguardi Altrove Film Festival
Sguardi Altrove Film Festival was created in Milan in 1992 and is the only competitive Italian festival dedicated to research and promotion of international films by female directors. Intersecting the themes linked to History and international news, Sguardi Altrove Film Festival also has as its objective to raise the awareness of the general public on the themes of the female condition, the promotion of intercultural dialogue and critical confrontation through the languages of the cinema and contemporary art.
Divided into two macro-sections, Il Cinema and Tasselli d’Arte - Oltre il Cinema (a collective at La Triennale di Milano, through t expressive languages tout court), in the part dedicated exclusively to the cinema, the festival is divided into nine sections, three of which are competitive and exclusively for films by female directors (all the others are also open to male directors) and presents each year, in addition to workshops and meetings with the directors, about 100 titles of feature films, short films and documentaries (Italian and foreign), including a retrospective on an author, a section on human rights and places of conflict and one on the professions of the cinema, consolidating the transversal nature of the public .
Alongside the screenings, there are countless rendezvous with literature, music, the theatre and a rich selection of works by international artists (painting, photography and installations) which amplifies the reflection on the geographical area of the year, examined in depth by the cinema and documentaries. Over the years, Sguardi Altrove Film Festival has become, by the attendance of the public, the attention by the media and critics, an event of great national significance.
Now in its 20th edition, it is traditionally held in March and is divided into four locations: Spazio Oberdan, La Triennale di Milano and the Fabbrica del Vapore.

The African, Asian and Latin American Film Festival, which started in 1991, is a long-established rendezvous for cinema fans and the only festival in Italy – and one of three in Europe – fully devoted to the cinema and cultures of Africa, Asia and Latin America.
The programme presents a careful selection of the most recent film productions (fiction and documentaries= in eight sections, five of which are competitive with a total of euro 45,000 in prizes.
Special attention is paid in selecting the films to the young filmmakers, the new trends and the new languages from the three continents. One of the competitive sections is for films by Italian filmmakers approaching other cultures.
In recent years, the parallel sections (retrospectives, thematic and tributes) have highlighted in particular the Arab world, China and quality comedy films.
The Festival lasts one week in five cinemas and the West Tollgate of Porta Venezia, in the heart of the city, is the Festival Center, a meeting place for guests and the public, a temporary location for exhibitions, installations and other non-film events.
The African, Asian and Latin American Film Festival is not just a cinema event but continues throughout the year in schools and universities with intercultural projects on Media Education and promotes, informs on and distributes films from the three continents. In more than twenty years of activity, the COE “Comunicazione e Media” – the association that organizes the Festival – has distributed some 200 titles in Italy.
The Festival blog - ww.cinemafricasiamerica.com – is the only Italian blog offering information on the cinematic and cultural news of Africa, Asia and Latin America.
